There Were 7...Now There Are 6

I went out to my chicken coop this morning to discover a pile of white feathers on the outside of the fence. My heart immediately skipped a beat. I followed the trail, afraid of what I might find, only to discover it tapered off to nothing. I went back to count my chickens...1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...only 6 in the coop. There should be 7. There were 7 yesterday.

I know they're "just chickens" but it still made me sad. They are "my girls". I appreciate the eggs they provide for my family and friends everyday and the joy they bring me by watching them stroll about during the day. I've mentioned in previous posts the unexpected peace that settles over me whenever I just sit quietly and watch them go about their daily strolling and scratching.

I lifted the nesting box door to gather the eggs and discovered there were 6 eggs nestled down in the straw. (One of my chickens is too old to lay, we just keep her because we love her!) So, what this meant was the chicken that lost her life had time to lay her egg this morning before calamity hit her. For some reason, this was a poignant thought for me. As I made my way back to the house I pondered this thought and, as often happens to me, a life lesson became clear to me. May I be found doing my "life work" to the very end. At the exact moment that my Creator takes me home may I be found diligently at work with whatever He has given me to do. Selah ("stop and listen")

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. I Corinthians 15:58
